Why I do cupping therapy once a week

Kyle Grosshanten

Cupping therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine in which you put special cups on your skin for a few minutes to create suction. People get it for many purposes, including to help with pain, inflammation, blood flow, relaxation and well-being, and as a type of deep-tissue massage.

One of the most common reasons people turn to alternative treatment methods is because they’re looking for a safe way to naturally reduce joint pain and muscle pain. For me personally it helps with deep knots and tight areas in my back and neck. Another reason I use cupping therapy is it promotes relaxation. It might seem counteractive, but cupping often helps alleviate physical complaints and allows people to enter a more relaxed state since it sedates the central nervous system. Perfect for after an intense training session when trying to relax before bed.

Believe it or not it also Boosts skin health. While studies haven’t shown it can necessarily help with weight loss, the fact that it tones and firms skin by improving blood flow and expanding capillaries makes it popular among celebrities and people in the spotlight who want to appear to have toned skin. As part of a skin-clearing or cellulite treatment, oil is commonly first applied to the skin before the cups are suctioned and moved around, bringing heat to the area along with various skin-healing ingredients depending on the type of oil used. I don't get too crazy with the heated oils but i like to use coconut oil to allow the cups to get a better suction.

With units being sold on amazon for $25, there is no reason you shouldn't be taking advantage of this natural, ancient Chinese treatment. So many remedies these days involve some type of drug or special root or expensive therapy session. Its nice that there is a cheap simple alternative that if done right works wonders. Just put the cup on the tight area for 8-12 minutes, release and massage the treated area. If you want the full  effect light some candles and put on some of that massage room music that makes me fall asleep halfway through my massages. If you guys try it let me know how it works out for you!
